چکیده

The accuracy, stability and consistency of new stress interpolation schemes is investigated, based upon sub-cell approximations. This includes the contrast of two alternative hybrid spatial discretisations: a cell-vertex finite element/volume (fe/fv) scheme and a finite element equivalent (fe). Here, the interest is to explore the consequences of utilizing conventional methodology and to demonstrate resulting drawbacks in the presence of complex stress equation source terms. Alternative strategies worthy of consideration are presented for a constant shear viscosity model, that of Oldroyd-B, with strain-hardening and unbounded extensional properties. We demonstrate how high-order accuracy may be achieved by respecting consistency in our algorithmic constructions. Both feand fv-spatial discretisations are embedded within this methodology. Linear interpolation for stress, of either feor fv-form on triangular sub-cells, is referenced within parent triangular finite elements in two dimensions. Finite element discretization is employed for the momentum and continuity system, via a second-order pressurecorrection scheme. In this regard, a complex filament-stretching flow with a free-surface is selected to compute the transient evolution of kinematic and stress fields. Shortcomings of various up-winding schemes are discussed, whilst dealing with such free-surface type problems and appropriate strategies for dealing with these types of problems are outlined.

Consistent Hybrid Finite Volume/Element Formulations: Model and Complex Viscoelastic Flows

The accuracy and consistency of a new cell-vertex hybrid finite element/volume scheme are investigated for viscoelastic flows. Finite element discretisation is employed for the momentum and continuity equation, with FV applied to the constitutive law for stress. Here, the interest is to explore the consequences of utilizing conventional cell-vertex methodology for an Oldroyd-B model and to demo...

Exact solution for the extensional flow of a viscoelastic filament

We solve the free boundary problem for the dynamics of a cylindrical, axisymmetric viscoelastic filament stretching in a gravity-driven extensional flow for the Upper Convected Maxwell and Oldroyd-B constitutive models. Assuming the axial stress in the filament has a spatial dependence provides the simplest coupling of viscoelastic effects to the motion of the filament, and yields a closed syst...

Fall and rise of a viscoelastic filament

When a viscoelastic fluid blob is stretched out into a thin horizontal filament, it sags and falls gradually under its own weight, forming a catenary-like structure that evolves dynamically. If the ends are brought together rapidly after stretching, the falling filament tends to straighten by rising. These two effects are strongly influenced by the elasticity of the fluid and yield qualitativel...

Measuring cell viscoelastic properties using a force-spectrometer: influence of protein-cytoplasm interactions.

Cell adhesive and rheological properties play a very important role in cell transmigration through the endothelial barrier, in particular in the case of inflammation (leukocytes) or cancer metastasis (cancer cells). In order to characterize cell viscoelastic properties, we have designed a force spectrometer (AFM) which can stretch cells thereby allowing measurement of their rheological properti...

Extensional deformation, stress relaxation and necking failure of viscoelastic filaments

We investigate the transient viscoelastic behavior of weakly strain-hardening fluids in filament stretching devices during uniaxial elongation and following the cessation of stretching. The numerical results are compared with experimental observations on a concentrated shear-thinning polystyrene solution which is well characterized by a multi-mode Giesekus model. The finite element computations...
